CALM Buoys

We are your single source for design, construction and delivery of CALM Buoys.

Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring (CALM) Buoys are offshore marine terminals comprised of a floating hull connected to the seafloor with catenary anchor legs and a rotating turntable to which tankers can moor to enable import or export of oil and refined products.

Industry Highlights

  • Algeria: SOFEC’s CALM Buoy project for Sonatrach was the single largest CALM Buoy order in the industry at that time, with five CALM Buoy Systems including offshore and onshore pipelines, pump stations, manifolding, metering, tank farm tie-ins, and power distribution and protection
  • Nigeria: Delivered CALM Buoys for crude and refined product to Dangote Oil Refining Company for the second order of five CALM Buoys under a single contract in company history
  • Saudi Arabia: Supplied two CALM Buoy systems for Saudi Aramco for a refinery at Jazan Economic City
  • Mexico: Delivered three replacement CALM Buoys for PEMEX at the Rosarita, Tuxpan, and Salina Cruz terminal locations followed by two additional buoys at Tuxpan and Salina Cruz
  • Multiple locations: Provided many CALM Buoys that have withstood numerous 100-year storms with no major damage

Product Features

  • Fast solution
  • Advanced design
  • Ease of operation and maintenance

SALM Buoys

We are here to service your SALM Buoys.

Single Anchor Leg Mooring (SALM) Buoys are marine terminals connected to the seabed via a single chain leg with the fluid swivel located on the ocean floor. A tanker moored to the buoy provides the means to import or export oil and refined products. These systems serve storage facilities, refineries, petrochemical plants, and power plants worldwide. Our valued clients depend on SOFEC Aftermarket Services, with some systems in service for more than 40 years, to maintain reliable transfer of crude oil, kerosene, jet fuel, heavy fuel oil, and other products critical to the industry.

Industry Highlights

  • United States: Developed a chain assembly quickly adjustable to site-specific water depths with no heavy lift equipment required to deploy or re-deploy the systems for multiple water depths.
  • United States: Designed, supplied, and supervised the installation of the first SALM system in the Gulf of Mexico to provide Crude Oil for the United States strategic oil reserves. The system has been in service for almost 40 years.
  • Japan: Designed, constructed, delivered, and supervised the installation of the first SALM terminal for a strategic crude oil storage facility located approximately two miles offshore Mutsu. The system has been in service for almost 40 years.
  • Denmark: Designed and delivered a SALM to operate in ice-laden and shallow water to import fuel, diesel, and mogas, employing a dual sink/float 10-inch hose system intended to be submerged and secured on the seabed when not in use.
  • Malaysia: The Tembungo SALM terminal was the flagship of SOFEC SALMs. This was SOFEC’s first deep-water marine terminal. When initially installed, Tembungo was the world’s deepest SPM of any type in the world.
